OUR THOUGHTS ON THE 'DAYS' WRITING SWITCH

Backstage shake-ups have been happening left and right on our daytime soap operas lately. NBC’s Days of Our Lives is the latest soap opera to release a backstage shake-up to the public. Soap Opera Digest first broke the news that Dena Higley is out as Head-Writer and legendary soap opera writer Ron Carlivati is in!

However, many can’t help question the switch. Many are wondering if it was necessary. Since its 49 year on the air, the classic NBC sudser has been making Head-Writing switches every minute of the day. Head Writers in the past three years have included:

Gary Tomlin
Christopher Whitesell
Dena Higley
Ryan Quan
Josh Griffith
Beth Milstein

The problem with switching Head-Writers so much is that continuity gets lost. Writers enjoy putting their own stamp on a series. However, when it comes to daytime soaps, writers need to back away from putting their stamp on a show sometimes. When writing a soap, you have to keep with the stories while still creating new and fresh ones.

Another problem with DAYS doing the writing switch at this minute, is that the show is starting to find its footing again. We are seeing a resurgence in the fictitious Salem. There are new and redecorated sets, plot devices that made the show popular, and even beloved characters returning. Ratings have even started to tick up again.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am probably Carlivati’s biggest fan. However, maybe this switch should’ve happened before Higley and Quan started returning to the show to its glory days, or even a couple years from now.

Now, this possibly means that Ken Corday (executive producer) maybe knows something we don’t. There was recently a rumor that the NBC soap might end after a legendary 51 year run. That rumor has not gone away nor has it been confirmed. However, maybe Ken doesn’t want to go down without fight.

Also on this story, Dena Higley seems to be very emotional but handling the firing very well. She took to FaceBook and Twitter to let soap and personal fans know that she is feeling the love through our posts.

We here at Daytime Indulgence wish Dena Higley the best in her next writing ventures! We also wish Ron luck on writing Days of Our Lives! Hopefully, the sand will continue to fall through that hourglass.
